I love birthdays. I particularly love book birthdays. And this time next week it will be the first birthday of my ‘Unicorn in New York’ series with OUP.

The first book came out this time last year and I can’t tell you how fond I’ve become of Louie the Unicorn. I liked his dementedly optimistic personality from the minute it entered my head, and when I saw Louie brought to life in Oscar Armelles illustrations I fell completely in love with him, in both fictional and knitted form.

He arrived with a bang last year with  parties in several different continents, and officially launched himself upon the world at the Emirates Airline Festival of Literature, where my junior-unicorns and I had all the fun.

Since then he’s travelled around schools, libraries, festivals and fairs across the UK and the UAE and I was thrilled when he was invited to be part of last Summer’s Big Read.

A week today, the third book in the series, ‘Louie in a Spin’comes out, and Oscar Armelles and OUP have made Louie look even more fabulously daft than ever in his funky leggings and sweat band:

I’m as excited by this launch as I was for his first appearance. That’s the thing about being an author – the thrill of every new book gets bigger each time as you realise how lucky you are people still want to read the things you write.

Louie will be ‘spinning’ again at this year’s Lit Fest on March 4th, so if you’re in the UAE and wondering what to do of a Saturday morning, do pop along. Tickets are available here. We have loads of silly things lined up for the show – ‘celebrity’ guests, quizzes, prizes, costumes, prancing unicorns, dancing dragons and other general nonsense.

The other, slightly random, thing we’ll be doing to celebrate ‘Louie in a Spin’ is sponsoring a ‘Schools in F1′ car. I have to confess this was mainly because I love the idea of Louie the Unicorn appearing on the side of a teeny racing car. I can’t wait to see it in action :)

The fourth and final book in the series will be out in June, when the series launches in the US. I’ll miss the sheer silliness of writing about a fame-hungry cupcake-loving unicorn who’s determined to see the best in people. But, don’t worry, I’ll cheer myself by continuing to lug my knitted unicorn around the world.

And, of course, there will always be unicorn cupcakes!
